Liam Murray Bell was born in Orkney, and brought up in Glasgow. After studying for a degree in English Literature with Creative Writing at Queen’s University, Belfast, he returned to Scotland to write for his Masters in Creative Writing at Glasgow University, before moving to the South of England to research for a PhD at the University of Surrey. Liam now lives in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, with his fiancée Orla.
Having developed a fascination with the Troubles during his time in Northern Ireland, Liam has spent the last three years researching the role of women in the conflict and it is this context that led to the writing of his debut novel So It Is. His writings, both critical and creative, investigate the potential for narrative form to work in conjunction with the content, as well as dealing with the particular historical and political situation of the Troubles period.
Published in several critical and creative journals and anthologies, including New Writing Scotland and New Writing: the International Journal for the Practice and Theory of Creative Writing, Liam is also co-editor of a book of essays entitled Writing Urban Space and teaches on the undergraduate course in Creative Writing at the University of Surrey.
