Mapping India's Children

UNICEF

India is home to 19 per cent of the world's children. This country of stark contrasts and striking inequalities - between urban and rural, men and women, rich and poor - is brought to life in a rich palette of maps and graphics to show UNICEF in action: its achievements to date and the challenges ahead.

Every year, some 26 million children are born in India - many more than in China or any other country. For some, globalization has brought increased access to information, better health care and improved living conditions. For millions more, daily survival, without safe drinking water or sanitation, remains a struggle and dying from preventable diseases is common. This atlas shows how UNICEF helps to establish better health care, nutrition, and education. It also explains the particular problems facing India - from HIV/AIDS to trafficking and child labour - and shows how the success of small, community-based programmes can be developed, replicated and sustained.
