Atlas inspires Gates' global campaign

Microsoft founder Bill Gates holds The Tobacco Atlas during a press conference in New York, 23 July 2008. Gates and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg have launched a $375 million global effort to cut smoking. Until Gates read the atlas and said, ‘Wow, why aren’t we looking at this?’, the Gates Foundation had concentrated on infectious diseases, such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

Lead author of the atlas is Myriad founding director Dr Judith Mackay. Early this year Dr Mackay was awarded an OBE for her international work on tobacco control. In 2007 she was named one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time magazine.
